Lupe Velez

Lupe Velez

Lupe was in 43 films from 1927 to 1944, the year she committed suicide. Her Hollywood career can be considered the most successful of all Mexican stars of that age. Her most memorable films are those from the "Mexican Spitfire" series of late 30's. On another hand, her love life was a disaster: she never recovered from her failed romance with Gary Cooper, who never wanted to marry her. She was married to Johnny Weissmuller, but they divorced after five years. Drugs and alcohol destroyed her life at 34. When she committed suicide she was pregnant by young actor Harald Maresch.

Raquel Meller

Raquel Meller

In only 10 films from 1919 to 1932, Raquel was quite famous as a singer and dancer in Spain, France and the U.S. Her private life was always followed with great interest by the media and the public. She was imperious, ruthless (especially with the competition), lovable, funny, temperamental, witty and totally egomaniac. Her love life was described as "healthy-plus" and among her many lovers there were royalty, heads of state and assorted VIPs.

Pola Negri

Pola Negri

Pola, on screen from 1914 to 1943, with one appearance in 1964, was in 62 films. She was engaged to Charlie Chaplin before she met and seduced Rudolph Valentino. Negri was Adolf Hitler's favorite actress and falsely rumored to be his lover for a short while (pre-war), despite the fact that she was supposedly part Jewish. Among her lover Rudolph Valentino's last words were, "Pola - if she does not come in time, tell her I think of her." She died in 1987 at age 93.
